Hora Sfakion

The small village of Hora Sfakion is the "capital" of the province of Sfakia, in south-western Crete. This region is almost unanimously held to be the most beautiful region of Crete because of its rugged nature at the foot of the White Mountains.
Sfakia is also considered to be one of the most traditional areas of Crete and Greece. There, you will be able to experience the real Crete and its inhabitants, as well as enjoy the crystal clear sea and the majestic nature.

Village amenities

Hora Sfakion may well be the "capital" of the region but it is only a village and does not provide all the services that you might be expecting in a larger town.
There are no banks or cash dispensers but you can change money, Euro- and Travellers cheques in the post office and in several hotels and shops at bank rates. Credit cards are not widely accepted.
There are public telephones as well as a telephone office but to date no Internet cafe.
The village has a few shops, bakeries, two small supermarkets and a laundry.
Nightlife (discos and late-night bars) is non-existent.

What to do around Hora Sfakion

Apart from lazing on the small village beach or wandering through the old village lanes there is not much to do in the village itself but Hora Sfakion is an ideal starting point to explore the region, on foot, by car or using the boat service.

Nearby is the beautiful "Sweet water beach" (so callled because you only need to dig a hole in the beach for spring water to come out). It can be reached on foot and in the summer months there is also a small boat taking visitors there.

You can reach the villages of Agia Roumeli and Loutro by boat or ferry-boat. From Agia Roumeli you can walk up the famous Samaria gorge. It is also possible to walk back from Agia Roumeli via Loutro on a beautiful path along the coast.

The village of Loutro is near the gorge of Aradena which is also worth hiking through to the ancient abandoned village of Aradena on the plateau above Hora Sfakion.
There are many more walks that can be undertaken in our beautiful region.

If you have a car (these can be rented in the village at Sfakia Tours) you have easy access to the villages along the coast east of Hora Sfakion. A visit to Frangokastello and further along the famous monastery of Preveli are well worth a day trip.

The cities of Hania and Rethimnon on the north coast of the island are also within easy reach (by car or by public bus) and definitely worth a visit.
